Emaleth’s take on Current Events

Let me say first and foremost I am a liberal democrat.  By that, I mean that I vote a straight democratic ticket, but my views tend toward a liberal side that most democrats won’t even touch.  That being said, please don’t take personal offense to any views I display here.  This is just my opinion….my way of exercising my first amendment, and if you don’t like what I have to say, then exercise YOUR rights and leave!  Haha!

First and foremost, I’d like to address the Schiavo case in Atlanta today.  It’s on everyone’s minds right?  For those of you who live under a rock, let me explain.  A 41 year old woman has been lying in a vegetative state for seven years, and her husband finally made the decision to let her go in peace.  He got the courts to rule in his favor that he should be allowed to order the feeding tube removed, so that she could pass on.  The woman’s parents, very upset by this man allowing their daughter to starve to death, went to the court of appeals in Atlanta today to try to have the feeding tube re-inserted into their poor, un-knowing daughter.

It is a sad story from the beginning, but even as the woman lies there, she does not truly suffer.  She is brain dead, and therefore doesn’t know what’s going on around her.  It is a miracle that she can even breathe or her heart beats without assistance, and that feeding is all she requires.  After seven years of lying unconscious, other than a few moments of eye fluttering and grunting, wouldn’t you want to die?   And, given that you don’t have the ability to speak for yourself, wouldn’t you hope that your spouse of so many years would make the decision you would?

I think the husband has every right to order the tube removed, and, apparently, so does the U..S. Appeals Court.  The parent of a minor child has this right…shouldn’t a spouse have it as well?

That being said….IT’S CALLED A LIVING WILL PEOPLE!  A living will makes sure that your wishes are followed in such matters.  If there were one in this case, it would all be moot.  If you don’t want tubes in you, or you don’t want said tubes removed by your spouse, make sure you have a living will to protect yourself.  Otherwise, you end up with messes like this!

In other news, it is coming to the attention of the media (finally!) that people are being discriminated against at work because of their religion.  Per MSNBC’s site “Thirty Muslim employees either were fired or walked out on their jobs last month at Dell Inc.’s logistics facility in Nashville. The workers, most of them recent immigrants from Somalia, said supervisors gave them an invidious choice: work or pray. Not both.”  Do they think this is a new problem?  Complaints to the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission are only a couple thousand each year, and growing a bit each year.  But that’s just the people that complain.

Do you people have any idea how many jobs I lost or didn’t get because I wore a pentacle around my neck?  I was in a job interview once, and was being offered the job.  As I was filling out W2 forms (it was a temp agency and they had to be done first) my necklace fell out of my shirt, and my pentacle shone brightly against my black suit.  Immediately the attitude of the interviewer changed.  Not only did I not get the job, but they listed me in their computer as not being able to work through their agency!  When I asked why, they couldn’t give me a straight answer.  More like wouldn’t, for fear of being sued.

Religion plays a large part in this country’s laws, work places, and daily lives.  But what people don’t seem to understand is this—the “freedom of religion” granted us in the Constitution goes for everyone, not just Christians.  And until this is recognized and people have the nerve to come forward (myself included—I never went to authorities either) this country will never truly be free.

And while we’re on the subject of Constitutional freedoms, please go to the site of www.965thebuzz.com and follow the links there to sign a petition against Missouri Senate Bill 32.  This bill will tax us on morality.  How would you men like to have your bachelor parties at 4 pm?  Better get ready, because if this bill passes, strip clubs will be forced to close at 10 pm.  You will also have to pay a $5 cover tax just to get in the door…that doesn’t go the business, but to the government.  Oh, and ladies?  Like to buy lingerie at Victoria’s Secret or Priscilla’s?  Get ready to pay the same $5 at the door, whether you buy anything or not.   That’s right, the $5 tax is imposed on anyone entering a store that sells or promotes “adult entertainment.”  Does this sound just wrong to anyone else here?  It’s one step away from censorship!  If you feel as I do, and you live in the area, please go sign this petition!

Okay, I’m out of things to rant about for today.  Oh, yeah, and Bush sucks! Lol  Until next time…..

The pope is dead.  I’m not catholic…can’t say it will effect me that much.  On the other hand, approximately 85% minimum of the people I work with are Catholic….I wonder if they’ll be wearing black on Monday……

They didn’t wear black.  But it has been the topic of discussion all week long!
